Psychophysical Relationships

چکیده

THE approach to the subject of this lecture is dictated by two of the most important principles held by the Medical Faculty of this Universitv in the teaching of medicine. The first of these is that the student should acquire a sound knowledge of the laws governing health and disease, so that no matter what problem confronts him as a doctor, he will be able to marshal his facts in such a way that even if they are not sufficient to make a complete diagnosis, he will be able to put forward a sound working hypothesis. The second principle is equally important-and is perhaps more a reflection of present-day trends in medical thought than is the first. It is that the teacher should be prepared to lose his identity in so far as the boundaries of his department or speciality are concerned, and follow his subject where it is relevant to other specialities. In this way, better than in any other, the student will realise that departments are created mainly for administrative convenience, and not because they represent isolated bodies of knowledge. Psychiatry urgently needs objective criteria whereby the phenomena observed can be measured, and whereby those measurements can be repeated by other observers. Only thus can we establish sound principles that may well be the key to some of the most stubborn problems of medicine. The study of psychophysical relationships is of great importance in the present state of our knowledge. It would be contrary to the facts to claim that it is the only approach, but it is one to which the scientific method can be applied with the greatest chances of success.

On the Relationship of the Psychological and the Physical in Psychophysics

This article presents a theory of the relationship of the psychological and the physical and uses it to formulate a new kind of meaningfulness principle for psychophysical application. This new principle calls into question the psychological relevance of many kinds of quantitative psychophysical relationships. As an illustration, it is used to study comparisons of sensitivity involving Weber fr...

Analogs in Luce's global psychophysical theory of Stevens's psychophysical regression effect.

This article is based on the magnitude production representation in Luce's (2004, 2011) global psychophysical theories for subjective intensity of both binary and unary continua. It is shown that the slopes of certain predicted linear relationships for magnitude production and estimation differ when, in the two procedures, the respondent-generated reference signals differ. This contrasts with S...

Connecting psychophysical performance to neuronal response properties I: Discrimination of suprathreshold stimuli.

One of the major goals of sensory neuroscience is to understand how an organism's perceptual abilities relate to the underlying physiology. To this end, we derived equations to estimate the best possible psychophysical discrimination performance, given the properties of the neurons carrying the sensory code.We set up a generic sensory coding model with neurons characterized by their tuning func...

A Glance at Psychophysics Software Programs

Visual stimulation with precise control of stimulus has transformed the field of psychophysics since the introduction of personal computers. Luminance and chromatic features of stimulus, timing, and position of the stimulus are the main features that could be defined using programs written specifically for psychophysical experiments. In this manuscript, software used for the psychophysical expe...

The tale is in the tail: an alternative hypothesis for psychophysical performance variability in dyslexia.

Dyslexic groups have been reported to display poorer mean performance than groups of normal readers on a variety of psychophysical tasks. However, inspection of the distribution of individual scores for each group typically reveals that the majority of dyslexic observers actually perform within the normal range. Differences between group means often reflect the influence of a small number of dy...

Colour Emotion Models, CIELAB Colour Coordinates, and Iranian Emotional Responses

Ten colour emotional scales, namely, "Warm Cool", "Active-Passive", "Like-Dislike", "Clean-Dirty", "Fresh-Stale", "Modern-Classical", "Heavy-Light", "Hard- Soft", "Tense-Relaxed", and "Masculine-Feminine"are investigated for single-colour stimuli in CIELAB colour space within a psychophysical experiment by forty observers. The relationships between Iranian colour emotional responses and CIELAB ...
